It's so hard to write a birthday message for you that sums up all that I feel for you after 32 years of friendship.  (First of all, 32 years?!?!)  And also I want to make it perfect - just the right blend of humor and wisdom - but, this being real life, let me make an attempt at writing a Jen-worthy note for your 40th...

I have so many fond and funny and profound memories - what's your name?  who's your daddy?; the "bracket face" drawings we used to make; cube peck!; you writing me a letter of recommendation for Bard; your wedding; meeting Ruby, and then Ben, for the first time; going to Plum Island; and the countless hours we've spent on the phone talking and laughing about life and love and all of the juicy details of life.  You have always been such a generous listener and supporter and so open and honest about your life and experiences.  I admire your ability to be a mom and a wife and an awesome cook and baker and creative kitchen lady.  Also your hugs!  So solid and warm.

You have been a constant source of loving kindness, support, wisdom and side-splitting laughter for over three decades and I am so grateful and honored to call you a friend.  

I chose this picture of you because it's been a favorite of yours and mine for such a long time and you look so beautiful in it (you ARE photogenic!).

My dear friend, on this momentous birthday, I wish you health and happiness and for you to feel all of the love and support and good wishes that you pour out into the world coming back to you two hundred percent.
